THE SAWS CHALLENGE VII! SEPTEMBER 14-16, 2007!

The general rules for the tournament are straightforward. You must use the same army for each game. The 7th edition set of rules must be used. Furthermore, contestants should know that this tournament is for fun, and that poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated.

  1. You must bring a 2,250-point force using the standard 2,250-point force restrictions.

  2. You must create your army using appropriate 7th Ed. Warhammer Armies book (only the latest army book will be allowed for an army!), or Campaign Book. Ravening Hordes may be used for Chaos Dwarf armies. For Dogs of War, see below.

  3. Dogs of War may use the "Dogs of War" and "Regiments of Renown" articles that originally appeared in WD, as may any army that have the option to take DOW in their army list. In addition, DOW armies may take Giants. No other army may take Dogs of War Giants, however.

  4. Ogre Kingdoms armies (and ONLY Ogre Kingdoms armies) may use Rhinox Riders. However, no army may take Ghark Ironskin, as he is a Special Character that is not in the army's book. Also note that according to the Ogre Kingdoms army book, Gut Magic Spells may not be used to augment any unit that is not listed as an Ogre unit on page 19 of that book, so Rhinox Riders may not be augmented with Gut Magic Spells. Finally, note that anyone wishing to use Bull Rhinoxes must have suitably larger models than ordinary Rhinoxes (i.e. the Forgeworld Bull Rhinox Models)

  5. You must supply the tournament organizers with a copy of your army list one month prior to the start of the tournament (preferably in electronic format, but hard copies will be accepted as long as they are legible and include the necessary information). This means that army lists are due to Mark Havener no later than August 16th, 2007. Folks registering after August 16th will be allowed one week to submit their lists. Late lists WILL incur a reduction in BATTLE SCORE! The judges need to validate each list prior to the tournament, so late lists affect our schedule.

  6. In the past there has been some confusion about what constitutes a legal list, and this impacts the ability of the tournament judges to do their jobs. In addition to everything actually in the army (including points spent for each character or unit, all army lists must include:
    a) the type of army being used (be specific...a player using Archaon's Horde to build his army and listing it as 'Chaos' WILL be docked points!),
    b) an indication of which character is the army's general,
    c) the name of the player either in the document or in the filename (both is better), and
    c) a breakdown of how many points of the army were spent in Core, Special, Rare, Characters, and Magic Items.
    A couple of examples of legal army lists were made available.
    Note that all rosters have names in either the document or filename, and the army using the Sylvanian variant list notes this.

  7. What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG). If a model is armed with an item, it must be shown on the figure. Models for army list choices that are not available must be converted. If you are in any way in doubt about whether your conversion or scratch built piece might not be acceptable please contact us before the tournament. We don't want someone to show up with something they can't use!  This tournament will have a painting score so painted models are recommended.  You may use non-Games Workshop models in this tournament.

  8. Special Characters WILL be allowed in this tournament. Only special characters that actually appear in the same publication as their army list are allowed. So an Orc army may use a Special Character from the Orc and Goblin army book, and an army from the Storm of Chaos Campaign book may use the special characters for their list from that book.

  10. You must conduct yourself in a manner that will not bring our  hobby into disrepute.

  11. You must bring all materials needed to play including dice, measuring device, templates, models, and any rules that you will be using.

  12. The following publications and articles will be in use:

    • Warhammer Fantasy Battle 7th Edition Rulebook.

    • All released Army Books (latest releases of course)

    • Ravening Hordes for armies without released army books or an updated White Dwarf article.

    • Armies from released Campaign Books (e.g. Storm of Chaos, Lustria).

  13. Since the release of the latest Dwarf army book, there have been questions on how to deal with the Slayer army. A couple notes: a) Slayer armies continue to use the unit entries in their army list. This means that slayers in a Dwarf army may have different abilities than slayers in a Slayer army. This is fine, as the Slayer army is a very special case, representing an army of a particular hold at a particular time. Note that references to "Warhammer Armies: Dwarfs, page 7" change to "Warhammer Dwarfs, page 33".b) The Master Rune of Grungni in the Dwarf book replaces the Master Rune of Grimnir in the Slayer army list (they're basically the same rune, apparently attributed to different Runelords, but the same nonetheless, and as such only one can be in the army (and the text in the Dwarf army book takes precedence). c) A Slayer army may not receive two "before first turn" moves. So while they may take the Strollaz's Rune, the player must choose whether his units receive that bonus movement or the "Look Snorri, Trolls!" bonus movement. This can be chosen on a unit-by-unit basis.


  14. A player MUST have a copy of all rules he is using for his army for his opponent to check if necessary! This means that if you want to use an article from an Annual or White Dwarf from the list above, you MUST have the appropriate book with you at the tournament!!!


  15. Each player MUST exchange army lists with his opponent before starting each game. This is actually written into the scenario rules as well, but many players miss it. You don't have to let them keep it, but you have to at least let them review it!


  16. Anything not mentioned or presented here is not legal for this tournament.

     

    A Few Words About Terrain

    At the SAWS Challenge types of terrain are many and varied. For the most part terrain we use is covered in the Warhammer Rulebook, but there are some exceptions which are worth pointing out:

    • Mushroom Forests: Some tables may have stands of mushrooms on them. These are treated exactly like Woods.
    • Fields: Some tables have areas of 'fields' with growing crops. These are treated as Difficult Terrain. If the fields have standing crops, treat them as woods for determining line of sight. Fields without standing crops (cleared fields or fields with very low plant cover) do not block line of sight, but still impede movement.
    • Rivers: The Rulebook (p16) tells us to treat Rivers as either Very Difficult Terrain or Impassable Terrain, and to treat fords as Difficult Terrain. We feel that this is too constricting to be playable, so the following guidelines hold true for rivers at the SAWS Challenge:
      1. Streams: River sections that are less than 1.5" in width are treated as 'streams'. Streams are Open Terrain.
      2. Rivers: River sections that are 1.5" in width or greater do represent rivers, and are treated as Difficult Terrain.
      3. Fords: Some river sections have fords. Fords are treated as Open Terrain.
    • Big Hills: Some tables have very large hills built into them or sitting on them. One these tables these huge pieces of terrain ARE treated as hills.

    Note that the order given above does not necessarily represent the order the scenarios will be played in the tournament.
